Businesses using private detectives more than ever

November 19th, 2010 by admin

Private detectives have generally been portrayed and somewhat tarnished by the media as people who spy on cheating spouses. A lot of people also think that the private detectives spend most their time in car taking pictures and following people. Although elements of this are true, specifically regarding photography, there is much more to private investigation.

The very best private detectives are highly talented, well trained and experienced. There are many private detectives who come from a law enforcement background or armed services. A private detective will be patient, highly observant and assertive and must be able to think on their feet.

Private investigators are frequently hired by corporations and large businesses to investigate various forms of white collar crime. Fraud for example is a big problem in the corporate the corporate world and research has proven that the vast majority of fraud is actually carried out by employees. Good private detectives will be skilled at gathering information on individuals from behind a computer such as criminal background checks and credit checks.

Corporate investigations can also involve having your private detective look into business associates. Business today is just as much about the other businesses and individuals you work with so it is important that ensure that your reputation will not suffer as a result.
Technology is a vital tool in the armoury of a private detective. Conducting covert surveillance often requires the use of hidden cameras and GPS tracking. It is essential that your private detective has mastered these tools as the technology will often gather material that could be used for legal action.

Knowledge of the law and how to conduct a private investigation within the law is arguably the most important knowledge a private detective can have. If the evidence has not been gathered within the law then it is useless in court. Often private detectives will in fact have a legal team they work with or will have lawyers they can consult with.

Sadly in the business world today there are plenty of people who look to exploit the hard work of others. There may be times when a private detective is needed so it is important that businesses know what to expect from a talented group of people working in the challenging field of private investigation.

Investigators target tax cheats

November 19th, 2010 by admin

The recently published spending review has outlined how the government will use investigators to clamp down on offshore bank account holders. The government has set aside £900 million for combating tax evasion and fraud. To succeed they will need the combined expertise of the public and private sector.

The government is hoping to it can raise around revenue by using private detectives to prosecute people for tax evasion, which will also act as a deterrent to other the government claims. In addition to this there will be a “cyber team” to tackle fraud.

Furthermore, big businesses will be put under the magnify glass and there will be no hesitation to make use of private debt collectors to help collect lost revenue. Much has been said in the press about how it is the least well of who will suffer the most under the coalition spending plans. However by also targeting the wealthy the government hopes to demonstrate that it will demonstrate fairness.

There is no doubting that reducing fraud and retrieving lost revenue through tax avoidance will be a challenge for the government. It will also be a fairly costly exercise for the government, particularly if they are going to tap into the private sector for private investigators, legal expertise and other skilled individuals.

Tobacco and alcohol fraud prevention will receive more resources, as will the cyber team and teams of tax experts to strengthen Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) coverage of large businesses.
It is estimated that as much as £1 billion a year of tax debt will be given to private sector debt collectors to collect on the back of a successful pilot scheme. By 2015 the government aims to have brought in £7 billion a year from lost tax revenue.

In addition to this, it is expected that those earning more than £150,000 a year, which is the threshold for the new 50 per cent income tax rate, will be investigated to see if they are paying the required taxes.

For London private detectives this presents a significant opportunity. Equipped with the right technology and relevant experience, investigators will have an important role to play in tackling tax avoidance, cyber crime and fraud.

The battle of cyberspace intensifies

November 19th, 2010 by admin

It has been reported that the biggest threats to the UK are terrorism and attacks on computer networks. The National Security Strategy is set to be published very soon and will form an important part of the Strategic Defence Review.

Terrorism has been a threat to the UK for some years now and the acts on London three years ago were latest atrocity. Prior to this the IRA also attacked targets in the UK and even killed the Queen’s cousin Lord Louis Mountbatten.

However terrorism was pointed out to be just one of many threats to the UK. The other major threat pointed out was cyber crime. It has been widely reported how cyber crime is a growing threat but because it is not something many people witness.

If the two are combined, cyber terrorism becomes a very serious threat and it is understood that hundreds of potentially harmful e-mails are targeted to government computer networks each month.
Other organisations which are targeted by cyber criminals are big businesses and financial institutions. Cyber space is the new digital battlefield and it is a type of conflict still in relative infancy.

However there are many industry bodies which claim that the coalition government and the previous Labour government ignored their warnings and never invested in the kind of security which was urgently needed. Hackers have become increasingly sophisticated and experts claim the UK government is currently fighting a losing battle.
For businesses in the UK it is important to remember that the vast majority of fraud is carried out internally. Therefore it is essential to have the right due diligence, especially if the position requires the handling of sensitive data or information.

More and more businesses have turned to private detectives to carry out services such as corporate investigations, background checks, covert surveillance and counter electronic surveillance. London private detectives have the ability to perform checks which are ordinarily beyond the capabilities of most companies. Furthermore is there is any suspicion it can quickly be investigated.

The government and businesses have to realise just how much of a threat cyber criminals pose. Both parties need to seriously consider redundancy strategies and re-examine their current cyber security.

Corporate espionage is big business in India

November 11th, 2010 by admin

Corporate espionage is an international problem faced by business. Any capitalist society will be familiar with competition in business. Competition is what drives businesses forward because if your business doesn’t move forward someone else will and it will be at your cost.
The business world, especially on an international corporate level is extremely Darwinian. It’s a case of survival of the fittest and as many have witnessed over the last few of years some have taken survival too far and made seriously bad decisions which in the long term only damaged their competitiveness.

There has been huge attention on some of the world biggest investment banks and in particular the focus has been on how they put short term gains ahead of long term sustained growth. If your competition was making money on the sub-prime market, why weren’t you?

Knowing your competition is crucial because if you know your competition you have a much better chance of getting one step ahead of them. It is in this business pursuit that corporate espionage often takes place and perhaps the biggest winners from this extreme huger for detailed knowledge are private detective companies.
Private investigators have become much sought after in India as the economy and businesses continue to expand aggressively. There are more and more companies hiring private detectives to not only investigate the competition but also to investigate their own staff. It has been reported that private investigation companies have experienced significant demand to plant spies in rival companies.
As a result of this, in many companies there is a lot of suspicion surrounding new employees because they are feared to be spying for a competitor. Activities such as forgery, false financial statements and transferring data are reported as some of the most common forms of corporate espionage.

There have been many surveys around the world regarding corporate espionage and they all agreed on one significant common factor. The overwhelming majority of corporate fraud is conducted by internal sources. It is little wonder when you consider this that private detectives are booming in India.

What does this mean for a London private detective? Being a well established private investigator in London can lead to new and exciting cases in emerging economies such as India. Having experience of working on corporate espionage cases in the UK or America is only going to work in your favour when you compete for cases in foreign countries such as India.

Domestic private investigation: More than taking pictures from a distance

November 11th, 2010 by admin

A private detective or private investigator can work and specialise in several fields. Some might be expert in undercover surveillance, other might be experts on fraud investigations and some also specialise in matrimonial investigations.

In many ways being a private investigator and specialising in matrimonial cases is the most challenging. When it comes to business there is no question that performing background checks, due diligence checks, fraud and any other form of corporate investigation, it is can be extremely challenging and rewarding work.

The last two years or so have been challenging for the international business community. There have been major setbacks and a loss of confidence in the financial sphere not seen in many many years. Investors everywhere have had to think long and hard where and what their money has been put into.

To restore confidence will take time and there will always be sceptics. However investigators working with businesses can help catch and prevent those who undermine businesses by taking part in criminal activity such as internal corporate fraud.

The other major side to professional investigation work is in matrimonial cases, which many people believe to be a bit unethical. Some might think that because matrimonial investigations involve undercover surveillance it is an invasion of privacy.

However, family is arguably the most important part of all our lives. Family is what made us who we are and as human beings family is what matters most. It is quite typical for a family member to approach private investigators at a difficult time in their life with their partner. They may be suspicious of their partner being involved with drugs, criminal activity or having an affair.

But by providing raw evidence these suspicions can be confirmed to be true or false which means major family decisions are based on more than theory and suspicion. Many investigators will say that if there is there is suspicion there is often truth but to base any major marital decision on suspicion alone could end up being a huge mistake.

Domestic investigators have to deal with candid matters which are often extremely emotional and sensitive to a husband, wife or partner. A good domestic private investigator will have to be well experienced in listening to exactly what the client needs are and in explaining evidence. All in all it is a job which requires much more than taking pictures from a distance.

Thieves Shift from Banks to Copper and Nickel Companies

August 22nd, 2010 by admin

Weekly crime reports show that incidents of metal robberies and burglaries are keeping police enforcers very busy.

Millions of pounds worth of high grade nickel and copper were reportedly taken from the storage room of the Henry Bath & Son company located in Liverpool in May. Law enforcers reveal that the stolen goods might have been transferred separately around UK just after the stealing incident.

A private investigator will not be surprised with this since this kind of crime has fast become notorious in society, especially in Britain. Ever since, banks were the main subjects of robberies. However, since the banks now use CCTV and other anti-robbing facilities, banks have become difficult to penetrate.

Seasoned thieves were then forced to change what their source of income. The next options available were stealing in industrial buildings or stealing in the web. Stealing using the World Wide Web as venue takes skill and a period of time to learn. It’s not in any way similar to the way you stole banks as means of livelihood.

Industrial targets on the other hand, are different. They are much easier prey than the internet users if you are used to bank robbery. Renowned copper contractor, London Metal Exchange value copper at USD 6,674 per metric tonne while nickel range at USD 19,394 per metric tonne. This means that copper and nickel are getting expensive nowadays, and big countries like China contract these metals to make electronics.

Copper is now a very popular target among any robber whether individual or by a band. There many are instances now where copper pipings in homes and even railways are being cut away by professional burglars.

Just this month, the South Yorkshire Police got 13 people behind the bars for various kinds of metal theft. The south Yorkshire pointed out electricity substations, high buildings and railways as common places for metal robbers.

The builder’s industry is a big target for professional thievery. JCB’s and heavy machineries are also subject for stealing. However, technologies utilised by private investigators such as GPS tracking, you can make your company less criminal friendly.

State of the art devices and procedures make it easier for the police to find stolen metals. Hundreds are being arrested everyday, but the thefts are steadily increasing. Getting an insurance for what you are storing is highly advisable, along with tight security measures and cooperation with police authorities.

CCTV booming in Dubai

August 22nd, 2010 by admin

For investigators covert surveillance is an essential skill to have, whether conducting fraud investigations or corporate investigations or private investigations. For police forces around the world CCTV is a very important tool and in some places more than others. If for example you are in London, CCTV cameras will be able to track you pretty much everywhere, particularly if in the heart of the City where it is estimated that there are over half a million cameras are in operation.

This is a very sensitive subject because it concerns your privacy and that is something we all value and appreciate. The thought of everything you ever do being recorded probably does not sit well with you and nor should it because everyone is title to their own privacy.

The effectiveness of CCTV is passionately debated from both sides. Both parties have very valid points but unfortunately their say is marginal because security has become king in a world where the biggest threat to our way of life is terrorism.

Evidence that CCTV is perceived as an effective security measure can be found in Dubai, which is part of the United Arab Emirates.

The police chief has stated that the Gulf Emirate will be increasing its surveillance ability and capacity in the aftermath of the assassination of senior Hamas operative Mahmoud al-Mabhouh. The CCTV footage was shown by news channels and websites around the world.

It is understood that that the existing network of 25,000 security cameras have played a big part in the local police’s investigation. With it they were able to identify the suspects and their movements, which resulted in them being able to paint a pretty accurate picture of what happened.

Unfortunately CCTV cameras cannot stop identity theft, a key element of the assassins operation. The people who carried out the assassin of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh were highly trained Mossad agents and in all likelihood they will never be found.

The events that took place in Dubai in January were very rare. Usually operations like this we are not meant to know much about but it was an opportunity for Mossad that they chose to take. However if we put that to one side and concentrate on more ordinary everyday crime, the most important thing is that the guilty are punished and if CCTV aids in convictions then it is worthwhile but needs to be reviewed regularly.

If a private detective agency knows the whereabouts of a child why would it announce it to the world?

August 10th, 2010 by admin

If the agency knows that Maddie is with an underground paedophile ring and that they will get her by christmas, why announce it to the world. Its very strange, The people abducting her could move her or kill her.

You would think that the agency would just get her and then announce it
